I’ve always known that Mountain Home offered the best fishing anywhere, and now thanks to the February 2008, FIELD & STREAM MAGAZINE Article on Mountain Home, AR, everybody else will have the opportunity to find out for themselves. As a child I couldn’t wait for the numerous vacations we took yearly from Burbank, Illinois, to visit my grandparents who were among the first Chicago area transplants to move to the Twin Lakes area in the early 60’s. I soon grew to love the beauty of Mountain Home and the great fishing! My grandfather and I would get up early in the morning as the sun was rising and literally sneak out of the house. My grandmother just didn’t understand the great pleasure my grandfather and I derived from fishing 6-7 hrs. on Lake Norfork. A quiet cove, crystal clear water, the unmatched beauty of the morning dew clinging to the delicate and numerous spider webs that were woven through the trees and bushes, the distinct smells…a combination of water, fish, and vegetation, and most of all the plop of the bobber suddenly being tugged beneath the water. I can still feel the excitement. How I cherished that look of approval that I saw in my grandfather’s brilliantly, blue eyes when I would land my trophies. We were never disappointed either. Together we would clean and filet our daily limit of fish, and my grandmother was always willing and ready to fry up the day’s catch for supper. Life truly doesn’t get any better than this. Now, at 55 yrs. old, I am trying to make memories for my own three grandaughters. Mountain Home may be ranked #2 for the best fishing town, but for me it is ranked #1 for the Best fishing town and the best place in the U.S.A to make memories!
